Be Alert for “Vishing” Scams (Telephone Scams)
‘Vishing’ scams are a new twist to an old scam method. As you’ve probably guessed, it’s a variation of the term “Phishing” – and the V stands for Voice. “Vishing”
is similar to Internet email phishing scams in that a scammer is trying to obtain account and other personal information by falsely representing a trusted entity.
Vishing may involve sending a scam email message to lure in consumers, but instead of including a link to a website that collects account information, the message
directs you to call a telephone number. Often the scammers reinforce the reason for “calling the number” is to ensure privacy and confidentiality of information.
Telephone based scams are increasing dramatically. Scammers are using the flexibility of modern telephone services to trick consumers into providing account
and other personal information over the telephone. With modern telephone technology it’s very easy to set up an “auto dialer” to call a long list of phone numbers
and leave pre-recorded messages prompting you to call a number. Or, if you answer the call a pre-recorded automated voice alerts you to a false “problem” with
your account and prompts you to enter your card or account information.
What is significant about these scams is they can easily mask the name and number that shows up on caller ID and display anything they want to make the call appear
legitimate.
Unfortunately consumers can NOT rely upon the information displayed on Caller ID devices and trust that the information displayed is valid.
How Can I Protect Myself?
To protect yourself from becoming a victim of Vishing, use the same techniques you’d use to avoid internet phishing scams.
- Don’t give information to anyone unless you are certain you know who you’re dealing with.
- If you receive a phone call appearing to be from Members 1st FCU asking you to provide information about your account, ask for the name of the person calling
and what extension they’re at. If it’s an automated call simply hang up.
- Then call the Members 1st main number at 1 (800) 283-2328 and ask to speak to that person, or request general assistance with your account. Then, you know
with absolute certainty you’re talking to a trusted Members 1st associate and they can take care of any issues on your account.
