Members 1st Federal Credit Union, a full-service financial institution serving members and communities for over 73 years, is pleased to announce that its Chairman of the Board of Directors, Jon Kirssin, received the 2023 Calvin Jackson Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteer of the Year from CrossState Credit Union Association. In addition, the credit union’s Indirect Sales and Service Manager Deana Barnes was named one of the top three finalists in CrossState Credit Union Association’s 2023 Credit Union Ambassador Contest.
Kirssin and Barnes were recognized at the Association’s Annual Convention on Friday, May 19 in Hershey, PA.
The Volunteer of the Year Award is presented in memory of Calvin H. Jackson, an outstanding citizen and credit union volunteer. The award recognizes a volunteer who has selflessly given time, effort and talent to the betterment of the movement and works to promote the credit union philosophy.

“I think so highly of Jon, and it is wonderful that his devotion to the credit union movement is being acknowledged and celebrated,” said Members 1st President & CEO George Nahodil. “Under Jon’s leadership, our credit union has thrived. He is so deserving of this award, and I thank him for all he has done for our members, our associates and our communities.”
Kirssin joined the Members 1st Board of Directors in 2011 after previously serving on the credit union’s Supervisory Committee. He carries on the legacy of his own father, who also served on the Members 1st Board of Directors. Kirssin was appointed Chairman in April 2018 and since then, he has worked tirelessly on decisions that will ensure the longevity of Members 1st's success.
In addition to his duties with Members 1st, Kirssin serves on the Board of Trustees for York College of Pennsylvania, which is also his alma mater. He is an experienced insurance executive with nearly 20 years at PMA Insurance, retiring as an officer and shareholder. He owns and operates a specialty insurance consulting firm with clients located throughout the country. Kirssin is a life-long Central Pennsylvania native currently residing in Mechanicsburg and has been a credit union member for more than 40 years.
Barnes joined the credit union industry in 2018 after becoming attracted to the credit union philosophy of “people helping people.”
“Entering this competition has allowed me to fully immerse myself into the Members 1st culture and build meaningful relationships with our leaders and associates,” said Barnes.
Barnes presented her project “Fostering Social Engagement for Remote and Office Workers” to a live audience and panel of judges at the Association’s Annual Convention. She proposed a platform in which credit union associates can engage and connect with each other virtually, much like an internal social media site. Associates would be encouraged to post about three key areas: member service, community involvement and associate experience. In an era of digital platforms and social media, Barnes proposed that future leaders of the credit union would capitalize on this tool as a way to come together and share topics that are important to the credit union. This in turn would foster an environment of connection and collaboration.

“We could not be prouder of Deana,” said Members 1st Chief Experience Officer Mike Wilson. “Her commitment to our culture and fellow associates is admirable, and we look forward to watching her continue to grow and promote the credit union movement.”
Barnes began her career in automotive finance in 2016 where she learned about the differences between credit unions and banks. In her current role with Members 1st, her primary focus is maintaining and cultivating strong relationships with dealership partners. Barnes is a member of the credit union’s Women in Leadership Associate Resource Group. She is a 2014 graduate of Millersville University with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology President Dr. Eric Darr, Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor and Members 1st Federal Credit Union Chief Experience Officer Mike Wilson today launched the 10th annual student financial literacy scholarship competition entitled, “What Does Financial Literacy Mean to Me?”
"High school is a critical time for students to develop the personal finance skills they will need to live independently as adults. Mastering the foundations of financial literacy is the best way to set them up for a life full of healthy financial habits, ensuring their future success," Dr. Eric Darr, President of Harrisburg University said.
The competition was launched 10 years ago by Harrisburg University to help further financial education among Pennsylvania students. This is the second year the Department of the Auditor General has partnered to promote it, and it’s the first year for Members 1st Federal Credit Union.
“Learning how to be money smart is essential to the success of our commonwealth, which is why we are excited to partner with Harrisburg University and Members 1st to promote this year’s student competition,” Auditor General DeFoor said. “This competition gives students the creative ability to write about financial literacy and encourages them to start thinking about how money works. If you know how money works, you’re in a better position to understand where your money is going, how it’s being spent, and you’re able to hold government accountable for how it spends taxpayer dollars.”
“Our shared commitment with Harrisburg University and Auditor General DeFoor to identify unique ways to teach the importance of financial literacy allows us to develop the leaders of tomorrow into financially sound individuals,” Members 1st Chief Experience Officer Mike Wilson said. “We are proud to partner on this crucial initiative, which continues to have an immense impact on students across the commonwealth and ultimately our communities.”
Last year, nearly 40 Pennsylvania students across the state submitted either a short essay, a poem or a 30-second TikTok video describing what financial literacy meant to them. Winners were selected by a panel of judges and announced at an awards ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda during financial literacy month. Each winner received cash prizes from Harrisburg University.
This year, Pennsylvania students in grades 9-12 are encouraged to submit either a short essay or poem about financial literacy. Three winners will be selected and announced during financial literacy month, which occurs every year in April.
First, second and third place winners will receive cash prizes from Harrisburg University:
- First place: $1,500
- Second place: $1,000
- Third place: $750
The deadline for submissions is February 15, 2023, and students must submit their entry online at: https://www.harrisburgu.edu/financial-literacy-entry-form/.
For more information on the student competition, visit harrisburgu.edu. To learn more about the Department of the Auditor General’s efforts to promote financial literacy, visit paauditor.gov/BeMoneySmart.

Members 1st Federal Credit Union was recently named the #1 credit union in Pennsylvania as part of America's Best-In-State Credit Unions annual rankings. This prestigious award is presented by Forbes and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider.
“We are humbled and honored to be included on this distinguished list for the second consecutive year,” said President & CEO George Nahodil. “The additional recognition of first in the state of Pennsylvania is a huge milestone for us and further reinforces our commitment to delivering unparalleled experiences for our members. We are so grateful to our members for their trust in us and to our associates for their continued dedication to our member-owners.”
The survey was sent to approximately 26,000 consumers in the U.S. who were asked to rate credit unions they have or previously have had checking accounts with. A full assessment was completed on each credit union being evaluated in the areas of trust, terms and conditions, branch services, digital services, customer service and financial advice. This year’s winners were chosen and identified after the independent survey results were calculated.
Across the country, 171 credit unions were awarded a place on the list, which equates to about 3.4% of all credit unions nationally. Survey scores received by financial institutions around the U.S. determine where each credit union lands on the list. Last year, Members 1st was second on the list, with this year’s survey results bringing the credit union up to the first spot.
“Congratulations to all of the credit unions from across the country who were recognized on the Best-In-State list, especially those in Pennsylvania,” added Nahodil. “We appreciate all that you do to live out our joint mission of people helping people.”

On Tuesday, April 5, Members 1st Federal Credit Union held a building dedication ceremony at its new headquarters in Hampden Township, PA. Representatives from the credit union, including President & CEO George Nahodil as well as Members 1st’s Leadership Team and Board of Directors, gathered to commemorate the new facility. Local community members and elected officials were also in attendance to recognize individuals and partners who played a significant role in the project.
This new building marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Members 1st. In 1997, the credit union built its longtime headquarters located in Mechanicsburg.
“Several years ago, we began making plans for a new headquarters to improve efficiencies,” said President & CEO George Nahodil. “I am so thankful for and proud of our associates who stepped up and brought this vision to life, all while continuing to deliver unparalleled experiences to our member-owners.”
According to Nahodil, associates were previously spread across multiple buildings. Selling the four separate buildings in the Rossmoyne Business Center and moving into one space where administrative associates can all collaborate was the most fiscally responsible option with an expense-neutral end result. Members 1st has sold two of the four buildings previously occupied for more than two decades in Mechanicsburg and plans to sell the remaining two.
The new, 185,000-square-foot facility is home to more than 500 administrative associates and includes 73,000 square feet of glass, which allows for natural light throughout the interior. A community room provides dedicated space for meetings and events hosted by the credit union. Other amenities include collaborative workspace, an associate café, a walking trail around nearby Hampden Township Veterans’ Park and an associate fitness center.
The credit union’s Senior Vice President of Facilities Dale Gingrich and his team were responsible for seeing the project through from concept to completion. “This building signifies much more than a construction project that spanned over 600 days during a global health pandemic,” said Gingrich. “It marks an exciting new milestone for the growth of our business and the exciting future ahead for our members and associates.”
The credit union partnered with several local businesses on the headquarters project. Alpha Consulting Engineers of York County completed the civil site design, East Lampeter Township’s Greenfield Architects oversaw the building’s design and Mowery Construction in Silver Spring Township served as the credit union’s construction partner.
“All of us at Mowery were thrilled to have worked with Members 1st Federal Credit Union as the construction manager on this amazing project,” said Mowery CEO and Owner David Cross. “The building is not only a testament to a world-class organization but also a living example of how to conduct business. I attribute much of the success of this project to the cultural alignment that exists between our two organizations and the entire project team.”
Since its humble start in 1950, Members 1st Federal Credit Union has grown to a full-service financial institution with more than half a million members and over $6 billion in assets. The credit union offers a full suite of financial tools and services through its network of almost 60 branch locations throughout Central Pennsylvania as well as its robust digital banking and call center channels. We are excited to share significant changes to its debit card program. The credit union is taking its members' experience a step further by offering contactless technology. This new contactless payment feature will provide members with more safety, security and convenience when making purchases.

Our new contactless debit cards with a redesigned look and enhanced technology.
Contactless payment is an enhanced technology feature in which you do not have to insert or swipe a card. When merchants have this technology enabled, card users will simply be able to "tap and go." The cards are still able to be swiped or inserted if needed. Overall, it is a much more secure and faster member experience, all while continuing to protect personal information.
"Multiple layers of security are at work behind the scenes with every transaction to include a one-time use cryptographic code," says Chief Marketing Officer/Chief Relationship Officer Mike Wilson. "This reduces risk of card-skimming you often hear about in the news."
Members at the credit union will also see that these new debit cards will have a redesigned look. This new look is a part of many other exciting changes coming soon. As Members 1st continues to reinvest in technology, the intent is to deliver enhanced services that will fully personalize members’ banking experiences as a part of a digital evolution. The reveal of an enhanced mobile app and website, complete with a redesigned look that is similar to the new debit cards and significantly improved functionality, will be unveiled soon.

Members will begin to see changes within the branches in an effort to go green. Through digital and touchscreen technology, members will engage in a fully-customized experience to meet their needs on the spot. At the beginning of June, Members 1st Federal Credit Union will break ground on its Hampden Township headquarters located in Cumberland County. The new campus will be located at the Hampden Marketplace on Marketplace Way, near Valley Road on the east side of I-81. The move will bring the credit union’s employees who are currently split between two buildings in the Rossmoyne Business Center under one roof in a three-story, 172,000 square-foot facility.
In 1997, Members 1st built its current headquarters located in the Rossmoyne Business Center in Mechanicsburg. The credit union is grateful to its member-owners for their commitment over the last 70 years and knows that the milestones Members 1st has achieved would not be possible without its members’ trust and support. As Members 1st breaks ground on a new headquarters, the credit union looks forward to improving efficiencies and remains focused on being good stewards of its members’ dollars.
“We are currently spread across multiple buildings which is neither efficient nor collaborative,” said the credit union’s President & CEO George Nahodil. “We believe selling our current buildings and consolidating into one facility is the most fiscally responsible option, with an expense-neutral end-result. It was also important for us to remain in our roots of Cumberland County.”
Plans to move were announced back in February of 2019. In preparation, the credit union sold two of its four buildings later in 2019. Members 1st had previously operated out of shared office spaces in the two buildings that were sold. Currently, their main administrative operations are in buildings 5000 and 5020 Louise Drive, using about 120,000 square feet of total office space.
Members 1st has been dedicated to supporting countless local businesses over the last 70 years, especially during the past several months. The credit union is happy to continue this support by assisting local businesses in getting back to work and partnering with them on the headquarters project. Members 1st has hired East Lampeter Township’s Greenfield Architects for the building’s design and Mowery Construction in Silver Spring Township to oversee construction.
The credit union has nearly 60 locations in Dauphin, Cumberland, York, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and Adams counties and plans to expand its footprint into Berks County. Members 1st opened in 1950 at the Navy Supply Depot in Hampden Township which is now known as Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg.
Monday, April 27, 2020, marks the 70th anniversary of Members 1st Federal Credit Union’s service to its members. From the credit union’s beginnings in 1950 that started off with nine people putting money into a pot, evolving into NSD Mechanicsburg Federal Credit Union with a desk and small counter at the Naval Supply Depot, to the extensive branch network throughout seven counties in Central PA, Members 1st has always been a place where members come first. From that humble start, the credit union has grown to a full-service financial institution with nearly half a million members and over $4.8 billion in assets.
Over the years, Members 1st has evolved along with its membership. In 1972, the name DAFCU (Defense Activities Federal Credit Union) was officially adopted and the first branch office opened at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle. The name evolved once again to Members 1st in 1994 to reflect the growing field of membership. The credit union has also added several offerings for members throughout the years including Investment Services, Insurance Services, Mortgage Services and a full commercial banking platform.
"Since 1950, our member-owners have been an integral part of the success story of Members 1st and that remains true today," said the credit union's spokesperson, Chief Marketing Officer/Chief Relationship Officer Mike Wilson. "We owe everything to them, so we are celebrating this year by making changes that will enhance our offerings to better meet their needs. Over the past 70 years, we have focused on providing a fantastic in-person experience for our members, and we are now evolving our digital channels of delivery to mirror that experience as well."
Members 1st is currently undergoing a digital transformation that will fully personalize members' experiences. By making themselves available by phone, email, text, in-person, or even on location, the credit union's MyConcierge® service can provide a higher level of convenience. Members will also begin to see changes and growth within the branches in an effort to go green. Through digital and touchscreen technology, they will engage in a fully-customized experience to meet their needs on the spot. The credit union understands that members still like to do their banking face-to-face, so they are providing more convenient options for them by adding more branch locations. Members 1st’s new branch on Eisenhower Boulevard in Dauphin County is a prototype that will offer new technology and digital enhancements.
Along with new digital technologies, Members 1st is in the middle of an evolution that will give an enhanced look and feel to the brand. "Members will begin to see a brand evolution," said Wilson. "The reveal of our enhanced mobile app and website, complete with a redesigned look and significantly improved functionality, will be unveiled later this year, along with our new look and feel."

Members 1st Headquarters Prototype
Another exciting change is a new headquarters in Hampden Township. In 1997, Members 1st built its current headquarters located in the Rossmoyne Business Center. As a part of the 70th anniversary celebration, the credit union is excited to break ground on a new headquarters to improve efficiencies as it continues to be mindful of members' dollars.
"We are currently spread across multiple buildings which is neither efficient nor collaborative," said Wilson. "We believe selling our current buildings and consolidating into one facility is the most fiscally responsible option, with an expense-neutral end-result."
Members 1st remains focused on expanding its footprint as well. Today, there are 56 branch locations across Central PA in seven counties with plans to expand into Berks County and Lehigh County.
Corporate responsibility continues to be of paramount importance to Members 1st as it has been since 1950. In the very fabric of Members 1st's principles are cornerstone values related to supporting community outreach and diversity. In 2019 alone, associates participated in more than 350 community events, resulting in 8,200 volunteer hours. Significant resources supported the great work of local grassroots organizations across the seven-county footprint through charitable community outreach.
In celebration of this milestone, Members 1st looks forward to all the exciting initiatives ahead and is grateful for the opportunity to serve its members, associates, and the community.
