If it feels like a tank of gas takes a bigger bite out of your budget than it used to, you’re not imagining it. But you don’t have to let higher prices take the wheel. A few small shifts help you go further on every fill-up.
Let’s hit the road so you can cruise your way to savings.
Drive Smarter, Not Harder
How you drive plays a huge role in how far each tank takes you. Easy on the pedal equals easier on your wallet.
Ease up on acceleration and braking: Quick starts and hard stops burn more fuel. Smoother driving saves gas and makes the ride easier on your car.
Keep your speed in check: Fuel efficiency tends to drop at higher speeds, so sticking closer to the speed limit stretches your tank.
Use cruise control when you can: On steady roads, cruise control allows you to maintain a consistent speed and avoid unnecessary fuel use.
Plan Ahead and Combine Trips
Ever run out for “just one quick thing”… three times in a day? Your gas tank notices. A little planning beforehand cuts down on extra miles, extra stops and extra fuel.
Bundle errands into one trip: Group nearby stops together so you’re not making multiple drives for groceries, gas, the post office or one forgotten item.
Plan your route ahead of time: A quick look at your stops before you leave helps you avoid backtracking and traffic.
Avoid unnecessary idling: Sitting still with the engine running? That’s burning gas while going nowhere.
Keep Your Car in Shape
Your driving habits matter, but so does the car you’re driving. A few simple maintenance moves keep your vehicle running efficiently and make every gallon work a little harder.
Check your tire pressure: Properly inflated tires may improve gas mileage (opens in a new tab) by about 3%.
Remove extra weight or roof racks: Junk in your trunk or gear on your roof makes your engine work harder, especially on longer drives.
Stay on top of routine maintenance: Regular oil changes, clean air filters and timely tuneups keep your car running more efficiently.
Save at the Pump
What you do before you swipe, tap or pump matters, too. A few minutes of planning could turn everyday fill-ups into savings over time.
Use rewards credit cards: If you’re already filling up, you might as well get something back. Some Members 1st credit cards (opens in a new tab) offer cash back or points on gas purchases.
Join gas station or grocery loyalty programs: Many are free to join and give you access to fuel discounts, rewards or member-only pricing.
Compare prices before filling up: A quick check before you pull in helps you avoid paying more than you need to, especially when prices vary from one station to the next.
Small Changes, Bigger Savings
You don’t have to overhaul your routine to spend less on gas. A lighter foot, a little planning and a few smart savings tools go a long way. Try combining some of these tips before your next fill-up and see the savings (opens in a new tab) add up.
