By the time summer arrives many of us are ready for longer days and warmer temperatures, but not so much the increase in the cost of our electricity. As temperatures climb throughout the season, air conditioners need to work harder to keep up. The good news is that a few simple changes bring down not just the temperature in your house but also your monthly utility bill.
Tips to Reduce Your Energy Usage
Choose ENERGY STAR products
Old or inefficient cooling equipment could quickly drive up your energy bill. Replacing outdated equipment makes a big difference. According to ENERGY STAR (opens in a new tab), certified room air conditioners use significantly less energy than standard models and they quietly keep you cool, helping homeowners save money during the hottest time of the year.Service your HVAC system
Regular maintenance ensures your air conditioning unit is working well when you need it the most. Whether you have it done by a professional or do it yourself at home, changing your air conditioner filter (opens in a new tab) regularly will increase efficiency, flow and air quality of your system as well as expand its lifespan.Upgrade to a smart thermostat
Managing your home's temperature more efficiently reduces cooling costs throughout the summer. Smart thermostats can learn your preferences and even be controlled remotely from your smartphone. Whether you choose a smart thermostat or a traditional programmable model, setting it a few degrees higher when you're away from home leads to noticeable savings over time.Use ceiling fans strategically
Running ceiling fans uses far less energy than air conditioners and can be a much less expensive option. The US Department of Energy states that using a ceiling fan in a home with central air conditioning allows you to increase the thermostat by roughly 4°F while still feeling cool and comfortable. Just remember to turn fans off when you leave the room because they are meant to cool people, not places.Seal air leaks
Small gaps around windows and doors can allow cool air to escape and hot air to enter. Weatherstripping and caulking are relatively inexpensive improvements that allow your air conditioner to work less while maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature.Block out the sun
Window treatments do more than look good—they also help with energy use. Closing blinds and curtains during the hottest parts of the day keeps indoor temperatures from rising. Insulated cellular shades and other energy-efficient options further reduce heat coming in.Shade your house
Strategically planting trees or tall shrubs around your home helps lower surrounding air temperatures and reduces direct sunlight. Focusing on areas that get strong afternoon sun—especially near windows—can cut cooling costs while boosting curb appeal.Reduce energy use around the house
Household appliances and electronics add to energy use—especially in the summer. Run dishwashers, washing machines and dryers during cooler parts of the day, and swap the oven for a microwave, air fryer or grill when possible. Unplug unused electronics or use smart power strips to cut down on excess electricity use.Take advantage of cooler temperatures
When temperatures drop in the morning and early evening, turn off your air conditioning and open the windows to let in fresh air and eliminate electricity use. If your windows are older or creating a draft, you may want to consider replacing them.Consider energy-efficient upgrades
Major home improvements such as replacing windows, upgrading insulation or installing a more efficient HVAC system can require a larger upfront investment, but they may provide long-term savings through lower utility bills and better comfort.

If you’re considering upgrades or home improvements, using the equity in your home (opens in a new tab) can help you foot the bill for these upgrades, which will pay for themselves over time. No equity? No problem! A personal loan (opens in a new tab) could also fund these costs and requires no collateral. Have questions?
