Beware of Jugging: Spot and Avoid This Cash Theft Scam

We are committed to helping you protect what matters most—and that includes your money. A growing scam called jugging has been popping up more often across the country, and we want to make sure you are in the know.

Whether you are making a quick ATM stop or visiting one of our branches, a little awareness goes a long way. Here’s how to spot the signs and stay one step ahead.

What Is Jugging?

Jugging occurs when fraudsters hang out near banks or credit unions and watch for people who walk out with cash or envelopes. They will often follow their target, waiting for the perfect moment to steal the money—usually when it’s left in a vehicle or when someone is distracted.

It’s a crime of opportunity, and unfortunately, it’s on the rise.

What to Look Out For

We’re not saying you need to be suspicious of every car in the parking lot—but it pays to stay vigilant. Here are a few red flags:

  • Someone sitting in their car for a long time, especially if they appear to be watching the entrance or using binoculars or a phone camera.

  • A vehicle circling the parking lot as these individuals may be waiting for someone to return to their car with cash or valuables.

  • Someone following you after you leave a financial institution or ATM.

If something feels off, trust your instincts.

How to Protect Yourself

The good news? A few simple steps can keep you and your money safe. Here are some quick tips:

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look around before and after you complete a transaction. If you feel uneasy, ask for help.

  • Keep cash and valuables out of sight. Never leave money or envelopes visible in your vehicle, even if you are stepping away for just a minute.

  • Be discreet with your transactions. Avoid flashing cash or carrying obvious envelopes filled with money in public.

  • Think you’re being followed? Do not go home. Instead, drive to a public place or police station and call for help. Your safety comes first—always.
