How to Enjoy a Cookout on a Budget

A backyard cookout is a great way to gather outside with family and friends. But hosting a crowd can add up quickly. With a little planning, you can keep your cookout simple, affordable and just as enjoyable.

Start With a Guest List

Before you shop, figure out how many people you’re feeding. A rough headcount can help you avoid buying more than you need and reduce the amount of food that goes to waste.

Keep Your Menu Simple

You don’t need a dozen dishes to feed a crowd. Choose a main dish, a couple of sides, a simple dessert and a few drink options. Then build your shopping list around what’s on sale and in season.

Need some inspiration? Try a simple, budget-friendly menu like this:

  • 🍔 Main Dish: Hot dogs or homemade burgers

  • 🥔 Side: Potato salad

  • 🌽 Side: Corn on the cob

  • 🥗 Side: Pasta salad with seasonal vegetables

  • 🍉 Dessert: Watermelon or another in-season fruit

  • 🥤 Drinks: Lemonade, iced tea and water
*tip: while alcohol is popular and fun to have at a backyard cookout, save on cost by making it BYOB

You can easily swap items based on what’s on sale at your grocery store. The goal isn’t to follow the menu exactly. It’s to choose foods that can stretch to feed a crowd without breaking your budget.

Save where you can, splurge where it matters. You don't have to make every part of your cookout the cheapest option. Maybe you splurge on the burgers your family loves and save on sides, drinks or decorations. Pick one or two things that matter most to you and look for savings everywhere else.

Shop With Your Budget in Mind

Before you shop…

  • Count your guests

  • Check your pantry, refrigerator and freezer

  • Plan your menu

  • Check what's on sale

  • Set your spending limit

  • Make your shopping list

Store-brand options can also help lower the cost of staples like condiments, buns, pasta and snacks.

Let Guests Pitch In

Hosting doesn’t mean you have to provide everything. Consider making it a potluck-style cookout and ask guests on the invite to bring a side dish, dessert or drinks.

Keep the Extras Simple

You don’t need to spend extra on decorations or individual drinks to make your cookout feel special. Use serving dishes and decorations you already have, offer a few drink choices and use reusable plates, cups and utensils when possible.

And don't forget about leftovers. Pack them up for lunches or freeze what you can. Getting another meal or two out of your cookout is always a nice perk.

Set a Spending Limit Before You Shop

Decide how much you want to spend before you start shopping, then create your menu around that number. Keep track of what you’re putting in your cart so you can make adjustments before you reach the checkout.

You can also look for opportunities to earn rewards while at the grocery store, such as using some Members 1st credit cards to get cash back or points on purchases.

A great cookout doesn’t have to come with a big price tag. With a simple menu, smart shopping and a little help from your guests, you can enjoy good food and good company without overspending.
